Gay men still didn't have equal opportunities to donate blood and help save lives. Unlike heterosexual men—who can donate regardless of recent sexual activity—even men who have sex with men must remain celibate for 12 months to be eligible. This creates an unequal and outdated standard that limits their ability to contribute.

We created a tweet-powered installation inspired by the rainbow flag. Every tweet using the hashtag #putredback triggered a single drop of red liquid to fall into the flag’s red layer—each drop representing a ‘wasted’ blood donation.

When the installation reached 100,000 tweets, the entire layer turned red, powerfully and visibly ‘putting the red back into the rainbow.’
